Changes ahead for call charges
By Aung Kyaw Nyunt | Thursday, 04 July 2013Charges for international calls will be collected in kyat, instead of dollars or FEC, from July 1, a Myanma Posts and Telecommunications official said last week.
"From July 1, international calls will be charged in kyat," he said. "People who have been charged in dollars can register a complaint and we'll change the bill to kyat," said U Aung Kyaw Thet, an executive engineer working on MPT's online billing system.
The latest batch of CDMA SIMs, which were sold by the government for K1500 in April, cannot make international calls when recharged used kyat-denominated cards – only those charged in FEC. However, U Aung Kyaw Thet said MPT would try to allow international calls to be made from K1500 CDMA lines using kyat-denominated recharge cards this month.
He added that MPT does not plan to release any new FEC recharge cards but those on the market can be sold and used as normal.
International calls will be billed at K900 to the dollar, although the open market exchange rate is closer to K990.
