US put a Myanmar general on its blacklist for alleged trading of arms with North Korea, AFP reported.

Lt-Gen Thein Htay, chief of directorate of defence industries, was blacklisted by US Treasury Department saying the arms deal with Pyongyong breached United Nations Security Council arms embargo.

The decision came weeks after Myanmar's president Thein Sein's landmark visit to Washington.

The statement by the US Treasury Department says the sanctions are not targeted at the Myanmar government but the military agency.

"This action specifically targets Thein Htay, who is involved in the illicit trade of North Korean arms to Burma (Myanmar)," the statement goes.

The statement expresses that Myanmar government "takes positive steps in severing the military ties" with troublesome north of the Korean Peninsula.

The sanctions announced Thursday restricted any US citizens to doing businesses with Thein Htay and freezes his assets that might have in US.

He earlier served as the border affairs minister in the government led by president Thein Sein and was replaced by another general.
