'My father showed world how to control the mind'

Sri Prakash Goenka, the fifth son of S N Goenka who was cremated on Tuesday in Mumbai, said his father was a man of principles. "Not many followers know this but my father was even chided by his teacher U Ba Khin when he said he wanted to learn the technique to cure his migraine attacks."

Goenka brought this meditation technique — that can be traced back to the Buddha — to India from Myanmar.

"My father hailed from a conservative Hindu family in Burma (as Myanmar was known then) and was a successful businessman. He was egoistic and to cure his migraine he had asked the Buddhist teachers to teach him the technique in five minutes so he could practise it at home," recalled Sri Prakash, who is a trustee at the Global Vipassana Foundation and Vipassana Research Institution.

"The teacher scolded him and refused to entertain him. However, my father finally decided to learn the meditation technique. I remember him telling us how he wanted to run away after the first two days. But at the end of the course, he learnt how important it was to control the mind."
