Doctors operate on conjoined twins

Doctors achieved a medical milestone in the surgical history of the country with the successful separation of conjoined twin boys.

The first of its kind in Myanmar, the 16-hour surgery was done at a children's hospital in Mandalay on November 26.  The twins, Aung Kant Kyaw and Aung Myat Kyaw, were conjoined at the butt.

"It took about one and half year for the preparation of their operation. When we operated the twin girls--Moe Ma Ma and Moe Pa Pa--in 2002, we thought it was the most difficult. But this is more difficult because they are boys. It was successful because all the doctors cooperated in the operation although it took longer than we expected," the doctors said.

The team was led by Dr. Aung Mya. Surgical specialists from Yangon also joined the team for the operation.
