Korean artist introduces sand animation in Myanmar

A sand animation artist from South Korea, Choi Eun Young, presented her artwork at the Korea Expo held in Yangon from November 8-11. She was well-received by the local audience as they had never seen sand animation before.

In an interview with Eleven Media, Choi Eun Young talks about sand animation and the artwork she presented at the exhibition.

Can you tell us about sand animation?

The world became interested in this artwork after it was aired on a Ukraine TV channel. After Ukraine, it was aired in India. It has been only two years since this artwork became popular in Korea. But it was able to gain public interest in a short time.

How did you learn this artwork?

I became interested in the artwork after it was aired on TV. I learned it on my own and did my creations. I didn't really get to learn it properly.

Can you introduce this sand animation artwork to the Myanmar audience?

This is a form of artwork in which you create with your hands, using sand on a glass surface lit underneath by light bulbs. When you are doing this, you can freely express your imagination. In the sand animations that are now being presented, the story line is created based on what you want to show. Then, the artwork is presented with suitable background music.

Do you use a special kind of sand?

No. You can use whatever kind of sand. Since Posco has invited [me] for this exhibition, there are some copper powders in the sand I'm using.

Are there any changes in the creation based on the types of sand being used?

This is the choice of the creator. There are those who create using sands from the beach while you can create with whatever sand you like. I like using desert sands and I mostly use only desert sands.

In which countries have you presented your artwork?

This is the first time for me to present this in Myanmar. Before this, I have shown this in Japan, China, America, and Europe.

What was the Myanmar audience's reaction?

Although this is the first time for me to present this in Myanmar, I am satisfied with the support from the audience. The audience seems to be pretty amazed. The number of people kept increasing daily and all of them were taking photos and recording videos. Some asked for my autographs while some took photos with me. I am satisfied with the warm support from the Myanmar audience. I am very happy that I was given the chance as the first person to show this artwork in Myanmar.

What was the main focus in your story line for this exhibition?

I was invited by Posco and Daewoo companies to present this artwork in Myanmar. As this exhibition targets bilateral relationship between Korea and Myanmar and the companies that invited me are doing business in Myanmar, I created a storyline with the idea of a cooperation between Posco and Daewoo and Myanmar for a better future.
