Daw Suu to head Special Investigation Commission

The president office announced the degree 92/2012 on December, 1 to organize the Special Investigation Commission headed by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
The commission is included three parliament representatives from National League for Democracy (NLD) including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, four parliament representatives from Union Solidarity and Development Party, two political party leaders, two from 88 generation students, eight government officers, a military officer, two from Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, a writer, two from Myanmar Environmental Institute, a representative from Union of Myanmar Economic Holding Limited, a representative from Myanmar Peace Center and three locals.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is acted as president of the commission and U Sit Myaing from Myanmar National Human Rights Commission is appointed as secretary of the commission.
The commission will report about whether the project is in accord with international standard for environmental conservation or not, the good effect and side effect on social and environmental, whether the project is beneficial for the government or not, the reasons to protest to top the project, the action taken on the demonstration, the conclusion of how to injure monks, whether the project continue to implement or not, whether the foreign investment should be stopped or not, the suggestion of development for the nation and rules of law and general conclusion and suggestions. The commission will submit the report to the president before December 31.
The president stated that the commission can call the witnesses, request for the documents and go wherever to inspect in accord with law.
NLD submitted the proposal to organize the independent nationalize commission for the effect of Lapadaungtaung project on November 23 in parliament and the parliament approved the proposal.
The joint venture project is implemented by Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited and China's Wanbao Company. The project faced demonstrations because it caused to seize the farm land, the damage to the environment, the health problems on locals, the demolition of religious buildings and schools and the government issued the act 144 to prevent the restricted area.
The monks opened protest camps on the restricted area since November 18 and the government issued a statement to withdraw the camps on 12:00 AM of November 28 deadline. The riot police brutally cracked down the protestors at 3:00 AM of November 29 beofore Daw Aung San Suu Kyi came and hundreds of protestors have injured including the monks.
The crackdown is the biggest crackdown since the president took office in March, 2011. The scholars and people from various spheres denounced the crackdown and the demonstrations are appeared at Yangon and Mandalay. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi went to the regions and met with locals, representatives from the company, and officials from Sagaing region, security officers and the injured people.
Titagu Sayataw, Shwe Nya Wah Sayataw and 88 generation students went to the region and met the injured and donated medicines and other requirements.
The 88 generation students stated within hours after the president announced the commission that they asked for an independent investigation commission and they have no desire to take part in the commission.
