Mandalay sees revival of puppetry

Mandalay's puppetry is regaining its popularity with more foreign visitors watching the show this year.

"The puppet theatre, which has been [losing audience] for five years, has been receiving many foreign visitors since mid-November. Our regular daily show always has a full house. We also get to perform one or two special shows," said Ma Ma Naing, the founder of Mandalay Marionettes Theatre.

After an opening act of the Myanmar traditional harp performance, the puppet show begins with a performance of "Bone-Gyee-Than", a folk song played with drums and cymbals. Other features are added to the performance based on the audience's request.

Khin Maung Htwe from Htwe Oo Myanmar said special marionettes theatres do not exist in Yangon anymore and his group has had to do the puppet shows at home.
