Max Myanmar Company pays K700m in compensation for seized land in Ayeyawady

Max Myanmar Company paid 13 local land owners 700 million Kyats in compensation for the seizure of more than 100 acres of farmlands in Ward No.1 of Ngwehsaung Sub-township, Ayeyawady Region on December 7.

The company paid a total of K 728.5 million (K2.5 million per acre) for 106 acres of land.

"We are pleased with the amount we have received. We are grateful. Like us, we want those from other regions to receive compensations deservingly," Thein Aung, one of the local people who got the compensations.

About 30 companies, including Max Myanmar, seized over 10,000 acres of farmlands in the region beginning 2001. But it is the first time such compensation has been paid to the land owners and it is the largest amount paid ever before, according to local people.

The compensation was paid at Pathein Hotel in the presence of Than Oo, an official from Max Myanmar Co, five-member group led by Tun Myint Aung of the 88 Generation Students Group, an MP from Ayeyawady Region Parliamentary and a law expert.

"We started negotiations with the company three months ago. We did it for three times. We will also negotiate with other companies," said Thein Aung, negotiator for the rights of farmers.
