Two more checkpoints will be open on the Myanmar-Thai border upon completion of the border's demarcation, according to the Border Trade Department.
Currently, there are six border checkpoints where goods are traded.
"Now, [Myanmar] officials are measuring the border line. After that, Mawtaung and Mese checkpoints will be opened," Border Trade Department deputy director Nyunt Aung said.
He said the checkpoints were ready to open and the deputy minister for Foreign Affairs was supervising the demarcation. The checkpoints are ready to open, just waiting for completion of measurement tasks, Nyunt Aung added.
Officials said the two new checkpoints – Mawtaung checkpoint in Taninthari Region and Mese checkpoint in Kayah Region – would boost legal trade and reduce illegal trade.
Trade with Thailand hit a record of US$515.46 million during the fiscal year ending yesterday, compared with $298.98 million the year before.
