China reaffirms commitment to bilateral cooperation with Myanmar

China reaffirmed it's commitment to bilateral cooperation with Myanmar during a high profile meeting between the Chinese State Council and the vice President yesterday.

Chinese State Councillor, Yang Jiechi also emphasised that China will not interfere with the internal affairs of a country and that it was up to Myanmar to chose the appropriate way to develop. During the meeting, deputy ministers of foreign affairs from both countries signed a strategic cooperation and implementation plan that involve multiple sectors.

The Chinese State Councillor arrived in Myanmar on a working visit yesterday. He also met with Speaker Thura Shwe Mann of Lower House, holding discussions about bilateral cooperation and Myanmar's political and economic reforms.

Yang Jiechi served as the Chinese Foreign Minister from 2007 to 2013 and was elected as the Chinese State Councillor in March. Yang spent much of his professional life in the United States, where he served as Chinese Ambassador from 2001 to 2005.

During his tenure as Ambassador to the United States, Yang tried to ease the tensions between the two countries following the 2001 mid-air collision between a U.S. EP-3 spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet off the coast of Hainan Island in the South China Sea.

He is as one of the most prominent architects of China's foreign policy.
