Fixed fortunes in Hutch global call

Hutchison Global Communications is on track to become a network solution provider for multinational corporations after emerging as a global fixed-line player.

The Hutchison Telecom Hong Kong (0215) unit is now setting up a foothold in every country in the Greater Mekong sub-region, including Burma - the last undeveloped Asian market - and in mature economies Thailand and Vietnam.

Hutchison Global is the first foreign telecom player to enter Burma, providing international data and voice services in partnership with local telco Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications.

"We see huge opportunities there, and we have to move one step ahead of our clients," said Jennifer Tan Yuen- chun, fixed operations managing director at Hutchison Telecom.

The firm has even expanded to remote markets such as Kenya, Nepal and Azerbaijan, and Tan said an expanding overseas client base will see Hutchison provide one-step telecom packages in alliance with hundreds of other operators in 88 countries.

"We offer value to customers by providing integrated solutions," she said.

On the upstream side, Hutchison seeks to help operators in less-developed markets build and operate their own networks.

Locally, Tan sees strong potential for future development in cloud computing.

She said clients are increasingly looking at the potential of incorporating cloud services in their live operations, not just as a means to back up existing telecom systems.

She said Hutchison will roll out several "exciting" new cloud services in the months to come.

There are plans also to concentrate on upgrading its backbone network to cater for the explosive surge in data usage, sparked by exchanges of more demanding high-definition video and mobile data.
