Illegal vehicles smuggled into Myanmar across porous border areas is leading to a rise of unlicensed vehicles, according to the the Roads and Transportation Department.

Myanmar police, border guards and authorities are scrutinising vehicles entering the country looking for illegal licence plates. A total of 1,242 unlicensed vehicles were seized since 2011 according to Kyaw Kyaw Tun, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

Those driving the vehicles without license are neglecting the Myanmar's import and export laws and police suspect some are being used by criminals to ferry drugs.

"There are above 50 illegal vehicles in a village and not one licensed car. We have already requested to the government for them to register the vehicles legally, in doing so the government can get tax. But they said they didn't allow the case. It's been almost 2 years now," said Saw Chit Thu, Brig-Gen of the Border Guard Force.

Many illegal vehicles enter Myanmar through remote jungle roads in border areas where the government has little control.
