Myanmar film industry to discuss rating system

Myanmar's film industry will discuss introducing a rating system for local films and videos this month, officials from the state-owned Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise announced during a workshop in Yangon on Saturday.

"Our main target is to monitor films and videos to avoid harming our national culture and religion. We are planning this to encourage independent artistic creations. We are studying the rating systems used in ASEAN countries. We will compare them and prepare for the best," Thein Tun Aung, Director of Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise.

Currently, there is only a single-tier system for local films and videos. The industry plans to classify films and videos under five categories: G (General), PG-13 (Parental Guidance - suitable for ages 13 and above), R-13 (Restricted for under 13-year-olds), R-18 (Restricted for under 18-year-olds) and X.
