Myanmar's first social networking site Squar has made its debut to compete with Facebook which has the largest subscribers in the Southeast Asian country with notoriously poor Internet connection speed.

The Burmese-language social networking site developed by an international team in Vietnam was launched this week to get the country's netizens closer.

Though the service is facing the initial challenges to recruit users to overcome as Facebook has overwhelmed the country's internet subscribers, according to Hollywood Reporter.

According to World Bank, Myanmar has one of the world's least Internet access rate with over 1 percent of 60 million population.

The Squar has currently collected users in "several thousands", says the report.

Most of the Internet access in Myanmar come from mobile devices and the country has currently less than 10 percent mobile penetration.

The incumbent government led by reformist president Thein Sein targeted a increase in mobile penetration to 50 percent in 2015, awarding operator licenses to Norway's Telenor and Qatar's Ooredoo.

A few years after the rise of Facebook, Myanmar netizens have found themselves addicted to the social networking and it has earned an influential role in the community.
