Myanmar to cooperate with EU to combat international crime

The European Union is helping Myanmar combat international crime and drug smuggling in a series of workshops on border management together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to officials.

As Myanmar prepares to take over the chairmanship of the ASEAN bloc of nations in 2014 the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Immigration and Population are preparing to take a more active role in fighting issues such as drug smuggling and and transnational trafficking.

"We can reduce terrorisms, transnational crimes and drug smugglings together with the ASEAN countries," said Myat Thu, deputy director of ASEAN affairs with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Although Myanmar tries to eradicate drug smuggling every year, the country is the second largest producer of opium in the world after Afghanistan. Myanmar's drug trafficking mainly crosses into China and Thailand.
