Residents whose land were confiscated to make way for the Thilawa Economic zone have demanded that they be compensated at the market price.
"We will vacate the government project in peace. The only thing we are asking for is for them to consider paying the compensation for the confiscated land at the market price," said Tin Ohn, a farmer from Baypauk village of Shwe Pyithar Ward near Thilawa area.
"When we were asked to vacate from our lands for the construction of the Thilawa port, 49 people didn't receive any land substitutes in Shwe Pyithar. We're having difficulties as we didn't receive any relocation fees, compensation and capital to restart our business. So, we have been living near the Baypauk stream, where U Ant Kyaw, the director-general of Human Settlement Housing Development, allowed us to live with his 'verbal order'. If we have to move again, we don't have any other place to live," said Aye Soe, a fisherman from Baypauk village.
The authorities have earlier divided the port construction area in Thilawa Special Economic Zone into 37 land plots, each of which are 200 metres wide on the river front and 750 metres long inward the land. These lands have been permitted for the construction of the economic zone in 2000 in accord with 1953 Land Nationalization Act.
The government has permitted military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic Holding Ltd and Myanmar Economic Corporation, Shwe Taung Co., Max Myanmar Co., International Group of Entrepreneur Service Co. (IGE), Diamond Star Co., Myat Myittarmon Co., and Myanma Port Authority to develop their designated land plots in Thilawa Special Economic Zone.
These companies have been allowed to construct the jetty and oil tanks in their area and import and distribute petroleum oil.
Myanmar Ports Authority has received US$204 million as official development assistance (ODA) from Japan for the construction of Thilawa economic zone.
