A host of musicians and organisations organised a fund raising concert for communities in need at the Yangon National Theatre earlier this month.

Led by two youngsters – one holding the national flag and the Myanmar Youths Union (MYU) flag, a group of students kicked off the event by singing the patriotic song 'Toe Bamar' means 'We are Myanmar' sung by early nationalists who fought for independence against the British.

The packed concert was organised by Myanmar Youths Union (MYU) and supported by Bo Bo Entertainment, Ayeyarwady Bank and Taw Win Development Foundation.

"Young people in Myanmar have a minimal role with difficult jobs opportunities. The level of education is also low so we want to help fund those needing to continue with their university study. We will also do capacity building programs in Yangon, border towns and other towns," said Zwe Yan Naing, MYU's 19-year-old chairman.

The concert involving poem recitals by Min Ko Naing, an ex-political prisoner and Thangyat - a traditional chant which satirises social and political issues - sung by MYU members.

The Myanmar Youths Union was established in December 2011 so that the young generation can have forum to participate in the country's reform and development processes. The organisation has already conducted many discussions among youths in Yangon and other towns, reading sessions, monthly charity activities, and providing information on elections and the constitution.

The proceeds from the concert will go to those living in the underdeveloped regions, conflict affected areas and conflict affected areas where peace efforts are underway. Educational and capacity building programmes will also be conducted. They will be run by experts every month, according to MYU's deputy chairman Aung Zin.

"I like this concert since it has a good purpose for education. I wish their charitable works to be successful," said audience member Win Phyo Zaw.

The concert was introduced by a university student named Kaung Sithu. The comedy show satirised the situation of Myanmar students losing out in pursuit of employment opportunities and poked fun at the country's deteriorated education system.

"Youths are active, honest and brave. They have their own dreams. But they are worried about their future. Some tried really hard, but nothing is happening for them. Then tey went abroad but at a loss to our country," said Mya Nandar, a founder of New Myanmar Foundation, which is a partner of MYU.

She added that the government should also support the monastic education by upgrading the teachers.

"The chairman is only 19 years old. We elders are very pleased to follow his good leadership since MYU's aim is good for society," said Myittar, a well-known comedian.
