KUCHING: Sarawak sprinter Mohd Arif Zulhelmi feels honoured that he has the chance to represent the country in the coming SEA (Southeast Asian) Games in Naypidaw, Myanmar.
This comes after a fine performance at the 8th SEA Youth Athletics Championship held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in June.
He clocked 47.64 seconds in the 400 metres race to clinch the gold medal.
More recently, Mohd Arif went to Kazan, Russia to compete at the Universiade Games.
He did well enough to go past the preliminary rounds but a hamstring injury ruled him out thereafter.
The Kuching-born athlete, who is studying Sports Science at UiTM Samarahan, is obviously delighted with the national call-up and vowed to do his best for the country in Naypidaw.
"I will also be taking part in the 4×400 metres relay race. I would like to go on record here to say thanks to Jayabalan (national coach) for having faith in me," he said.
He will resume training as soon as he recovers from his injury.
While in Sarawak, he normally trains six time a week with Mohd Ali Seruji.
Coach Mohd Ali, currently attached to the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), is also a teacher with SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg (TAHO).
