It is not impossible for Myanmar to copy federal systems from other countries because in the end, only a system that serves the interest of the all Myanmar nationals can be established, says Union Parliament speaker.
Speaker Thura Shwe Mann made the comment during a meeting on the national races' rights protection bill in Nay Pyi Taw on August 6.
Shwe Mann presided over the meeting, which focused on federal system, was also attended by Upper House speaker Khin Aung Myint, union government ministers and parliamentarians.
"What type of federal system will our country establish? It must be beneficial to our citizens. American-style federal system is not possible and nor is the German style. Switzerland's federal system is not possible either. We must establish a federal system that is most suitable for the Myanmar people and benefits the country," said Speaker Shwe Mann.
During his visit to the United States in June this year, Shwe Mann said federal system did not mean secession but living in coexistence with power sharing. In the visit, he also publicly revealed that he wanted to be the president.
Some ethnic leaders have lauded former military general Shwe Mann for his acceptance of and positive views on federal system although the military junta expressed concern over federal system, thinking that it was a system of secession from the union.
Shwe Mann, who is also Lower House Speaker, took over the duties of Union Parliament speaker from Khin Aung Myint, Upper House speaker, at the end of last month.
Myanmar's Union Parliament has two chambers—upper and lower houses. The speakers of both houses have to serve as Union Parliament speaker in turn during the five-year term.
