US CONTINUES MYANMAR GEMS BAN

US has maintained a ban of import of jades and rubies from Myanmar
despite several relaxation.

The US administration is rekindling the relations with the Southeast
Asian country as the military gave up power in 2011 after five decades
of misrule by lifting various economic sanctions against the country.

US corporations have been allowed to invest in and trade with Myanmar
as the Obama administration show its support for the much-lauded
reforms being initiated by the quasi-civilian government headed by
former general Thein Sein.

"The administration is maintaining restrictions on specific activities
and actors that contribute to human rights abuses or undermine Burma's
democratic reform process," US deputy national security adviser Ben
Rhodes said in a statement, referring the country's previous name.
The ban is better known as gems ban targeting the authorities and
businessmen who made profits from resources mining and deteriorate
human rights abuses in the country.

US recently blacklisted a top army officer of Myanmar for suspected
dealing with North Korea.

Jades are being mined mainly in the conflict-prone Kachin State.
