482 made homeless and 114 houses destroyed in Thandwe violence

At least 482 people were made homeless and 114 homes were destroyed from the Thandwe violence that was brought to an end after week-long of intensive clamp down by the authorities, according to officials.
The Thandwe violence which started on the evening of September 29 and ended on October 4 in Rakhine State also claimed five lives and injured five others, officials said.
In addition to the destroyed houses, three religious buildings and a petrol godown were burned to the ground by rioters.
The government said the authorities detained 44 suspects including two women involved in the violence. The suspects detained include 37 Rakhines and two Kaman ethnics, said senior police officer Kyaw Tint.
Suspected murder and arsonists were detained at the Thandwe Prison for security reasons, the police said.
"14 suspects are from the town and 25 others are from nearby villages," said the chief police officer for Thandwe District.
Among them, two involved in attacking a house owned by a Kaman who ignited the public anger there in the town were later released on bail.
"They [suspects] are now under police interrogation at Thandwe Prison. Those two who involved in an attack at the beginning of the violence were released on bail," said a police officer from Thandwe.
