Bandh against border fencing hits normal life in Manipur

Normal life in Manipur was Monday paralysed owing to the dawn to dusk bandh called in protest against alleged failure of the Centre and state government to take initiatives to bring a positive solution to the "controversial" fencing at the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border.

The 12-hour bandh imposed by the Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing (CPLBF) pressurizing the Centre and Manipur government to demarcate the border between India and Myanmar before fencing was supported by various civil organizations based both in valley and hills of the state.

No untoward, except some sporadic incidents, was reported during the bandh hours. Bandh supporters took to the streets at various places and imposed the bandh.

They smashed windshields of some vehicles along the Tidim (Imphal-Churachandpur) road for defying the bandh before police intervened.

At the border town Moreh, strike supporters came out at the street near Moreh College and blocked movement of all kinds of movement, forcing Imphal bound vehicles leaving Moreh stranded there for the day.

The bandh hit normal cross border business at Namphalong market on Myanmar side. Even though, shops were seen opened, the business was dull as no customer from Indian side entered to the market place owing to the bandh.

In Imphal, important streets and market places wore deserted look as shops and business establishments remained close for the day.

Educational institutions remained closed. Passenger services and inter district and interstate buses suspended their services for the day. Attendance in government offices was low.
