IMPHAL, Oct 7 – A dawn-to-dusk Statewide general strike in Manipur paralysed normal life in the Northeastern border State on Monday.
The strike was called by Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing (CPLBF) to protest the State Government's alleged indifferent attitude over the controversial border fencing works along Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar international border.
The strike was total in the State capital besides other towns including Moreh with several political parties and civil society organisations supporting the strike.
Imphal wore a desolate look since early morning till the end of the strike at 5 pm today as all the inter-State and inter-district passenger and goods services were off the road. Only some private two wheelers and cars were seen in the Imphal streets. Strike supporters burned tyres and blocked passersby. However, there is no report of any untoward incidents.
The attendance in government offices was very poor while all private offices remained closed for the day. The educational institutions and other commercial establishments including banks and markets also remained closed during the strike.
The government's move to fence the 398-km Manipur sector of Indo-Myanmar border by leaving Manipur villages on the other side of the fence and the move by Myanmar troops to set up a temporary camp inside Indian land have evoked widespread protests in Manipur.
The CPLBF has demanded a re-survey of the Manipur border areas along the Indo-Myanmar international border. They said that the move to construct border fencing along the Manipur border will affect around 20,000 people living in 43 border villages if the authority failed to re-survey the border pillars.
