The Reserve pipeline of Shwe gas project constructed across the Ayeyarwady River caused the worry among locals because it can change the course of the river and cut off the waterway.
The reserve pipeline is constructed near Saku Township and Khone Su village across the river and no one have informed the local about the construction, said O Lar, a local from Shwe Gas Pipeline Watch Network Group.
The Shwe gas project is not followed international standard, according to analysts and environmental specialists. It had two explosions near Shan State during the trail test and caused the concern among locals, Mine Myo Aung from Ta'ang Students and Youth Organization said.
Locals are worried about the change of waterway and having sand flat because of the erecting of the embankment to protect gas pipeline. Local are also afraid of higher prices for transportation charges to carry their crops.
Moreover locals assumed that the reserve pipeline is intended for the Shwe oil and natural gas to substitute. According to a representative from Shwe Gas Pipeline Watch Network Group, the locals and environmental specialists want to know about how the government is prepared to take action against the company who is responsible for Shwe gas project if the pipeline has explosion or has leakage that can contaminate to nearby environment and Ayeyawardy River.
