State-owned film enterprise to assist on cinema upgrades

YANGON—Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprises (MMPE) will help cinema owners get loans from government and private banks if they need financial assistance to upgrade their cinemas.

"Some owners may have some difficulties in upgrading to digital systems. About Ks 200 million is required to establish a digital cinema," said Thein Tun Aung, director-general of state-owned MMPE.
"The cinema owners may face difficulties upgrading to digital as they have invested their money in buying the cinemas. So, we will help them to receive loans from government and private banks," he said.

The cinema owners need to submit their estimated costs in detail to MMPE, according to the official.
Zaw Min from the Mingalar Cinema Group, which currently owns most cinemas in Myanmar, said he could also assist the cinema owners as his company has experience upgrading to digital systems.

"Most of our cinemas have been upgraded to digital cinemas. So, I know about the expense, the required machines and the technologies. Owners who want to upgrade their cinemas to a digital system can ask me for help. As I'm an executive member of the MMPE, I can provide a lot of assistance," said Zaw Min.

Many cinemas around the country have been trying to upgrade to digital systems this year.
