US official for Myanmar due Feb 1

US Senior Adviser for Burma Judith Beth Cefkin will arrive in Dhaka on February 1 for a three-day visit to Bangladesh to consult with international partners, including senior government officials, on Rohingya issues and other developments in Myanmar.

This will be her first visit to Bangladesh since she was appointed senior adviser for Burma of the US State Department in September 2013.

Foreign ministry sources said Cefkin would meet Prime Minister's International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, Disaster Management Minister Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, and Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haq.

Officials said the US considers Bangladesh to be an important part towards immediate solution of Rohingya problems. Bangladesh is also part of mid-term and long-term solution of the Rohingya issue, they added.

According to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, there are more than 2 lakh Rohingyas in Bangladesh now, including 30,000 documented refugees living in two government-run camps--Kutupalong and Nayapara--within 2km of the Myanmar border.

However, the government's data suggest that around 5 lakh more Rohingyas are living outside the camps in Bangladesh.

Cefkin is due to depart Dhaka for Myanmar on February 3.
