Addl BGB deployed at Myanmar border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has deployed additional forces along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Nykhangchhari of Bandarban as tension mounted in the area after Myanmar Border Guard Police fired on a BGB patrol team and detained one of its members on Wednesday.

The BGB member, Nayek Mizanur Rahman, remained captive till Thursday night, acting deputy commissioner of Bandarban Ishrat Jaman told The Daily Star.

Myanmar Border Guard Police opened fire at the BGB patrol team in Panchhari Aga area in Dochhari union of Nykhangchhari indiscriminately around 8:30am on Wednesday and picked up Mizanur, reports our correspondent quoting witnesses.

Meanwhile, the foreign ministry today summoned the ambassador of Myanmar in Dhaka to protest the incident and demanded immediate release of Mizanur Rahman.

Talking to the Myanmar ambassador, Secretary (bilateral) Mustafa Kamal also demanded a thorough investigation into the matter to prevent recurrence of such incident, according to a foreign ministry press release.

The Myanmar ambassador assured that the matter would be duly conveyed to the authorities concerned in Myanmar immediately and that he would get back to the Bangladesh side as soon as he heard from them.

The Bangladesh embassy in Myanmar also demanded from the Myanmar foreign ministry an immediate investigation into the matter and release of the captive BGB member.
