Myanmar Launches Another Mangrove Forest Rehabilitation Project

YANGON, May 5 (Bernama) -- Myanmar has launched another mangrove forest rehabilitation project in the Kadonkani forest reserve in Ayeyawaddy delta region with more cyclone shelters planned, Xinhua news agency reported official media as saying.

The project, covering 1,215 hectares of mangrove forest plantations, is carried out in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is part of efforts to protect mangrove forests in the region.

Vast stretches of mangrove forest in the Ayeyawaddy delta have turned into paddy fields, salt fields and fish or shrimp ponds due to changes.

The remaining mangrove forest provided protection to locals when cyclone Nargis hit the region in 2008.

Myanmar has carried out multi-purpose management and reforestation plans from 2007 to 2013.

As a nation with the 7th largest mangrove forest in the world, the country has 200,000 hectares of mangrove forest which accounts for 3.3 percent of the total area in the world.

Most of the mangrove forest lies in Rakhine state, Ayeyawaddy and Tanintharyi regions.
