Myanmar Lawyers Demonstrate Against Government For Leasing Historic Building

YANGON, May 29 (Bernama) -- The Myanmar Lawyers' Network has staged a 200-strong demonstration here against the government's decision to lease the Yangon Divisional Court building, which is a historical one, to a private company which will turn it to a hotel, China's Xinhua news agency reported citing state media report Thursday.

Criticising the government for lack of transparency, Advocate of the Myanmar Lawyers' Network U Soe Tint Yi, said the network will file a lawsuit against the Chairman of the Myanmar Investment Commission and the private company.

Negotiating with Minister at the President's Office U Soe Thane, the network demanded preservation of the historical building rather than leasing it as a hotel in order to maintain the integrity of the country, saying that "the architecture of the building is just for a court".

According to historic record, the second parliamentary meeting of Myanmar's Upper House was held at the building of the Yangon Divisional Court after the country regained independence in 1948.

Township courts and the Yangon Divisional Court were reportedly forced to vacate the building in early 2012.
