Yingjiang, China earthquake injures at least 29

YINGJIANG , China, May 30 (UPI) --A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in southwest China Friday injured at least 29 people, officials said.

The earthquake struck Yingjiang County in Yunnan province, near China's border with Myanmar, at 9:20 a.m. local time, with an epicenter near the city of Kachang. Tremors were strongly felt in the county capital of Yingjiang.

The earthquake cut off electricity to rural villages, but communications were not interrupted, the provincial civil affairs department said.

A primary school, evacuated during the earthquake, was damaged in a 5.6-magnitude quake last week. The county also experienced a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in 2011, in which 26 people died and over 300 were injured.

The county lies where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates meet, making it prone to seismic activity.
