HANOI, June 6 (Bernama) -- Myanmar's parboiled rice exports are likely to surge to 300,000 tonnes in the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the Myanmar Rice Industry Association said.
The figure is up almost nine times higher than the 30,000 tonnes shipped abroad in the previous fiscal year, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
The government is keen to expand the local market for parboiled rice besides increasing foreign demand for the commodity.
The Myanmar Agribusiness Public Corporation said the government hopes to raise domestic sales of parboiled rice to 300,000 tonnes per annum.
Construction of new rice mills will be completed before the monsoon harvest and are expected to produce up to 1,800 tonnes of parboiled rice per day.
Rice mills with production capacity of between 50 tonnes and 100 tonnes per day are currently being constructed.
