Thai True Corp prepares to enter Myanmar cable TV market

Thailand's leading cable TV provider, True Corporation, plans to enter Myanmar cable TV market once the Myanmar government grants licences to foreign media organisations.
The Bangkok Post reported that True expects to finalise the joint-venture plan with the government and plans to invest at least 1 billion baht (US$31 million) for the cable TV project this year.
True's chief executive Suphachai Chearavanont told the Bangkok Post that True will offer local-language programmmes for the Myanmar audience.
Zaw Zaw Myo Lwin, the managing director of Yangon Hartz Media and Business Solution, said there are now more TV channels in Myanmar and the audience prefers free-to-air channels.
Myanmar launched its first TV broadcasting in 1980. There are five free-to-air TV channels available in Myanmar. The government has allowed Forever Group and Shwe Than Lwin Media to provide cable TV channels for the local audience.
Last April, Myanmar held a workshop on broadcast regulation in Nay Pyi Taw to discuss about drafting a new Television and Video Law. The draft is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
