Yangon factory workers call off strike

Workers at Taw Win Wood Factory in Yangon have called off a strike after the labour office ruled in their favour, saying they should be subjected to fair labour practices.
The strike was called off on November 11 in Insein Township after the Arbitration Office on November 10 said four of the five conditions of the workers shall be granted.
The protestors sought the following: workers should not be sent to other companies' sites; workers must be consulted before any rules are enforced; employment contracts should be awarded right away; and social security cards must be given within a week. All these conditions were granted except for one, which would have allowed labourers who are not permitted to enter the factory be given wages.
The workers had been on a 24-hour strike since October 25 after the company forced them to work in construction sites of other companies. On November 7, after a 14-day strike without action from authorities, the workers staged a strike in front of the Department of Factories and Labor Law Inspection.
