Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication (MPT) has suspended its plan to charge mobile phone Internet users at volume-based rate instead of time-based rate, official said.
The announcement was made last night after MPT held a press conference in Pazundaung township yesterday to discuss its plan to charge a volume-based rate.
MPT will continue to charge two kyats per minute for a GSM SIM card and four kyats per minute for WCDMA and CDMA 800 SIM cards until the end of the year.
"After meeting with the press, we submitted a report to the authorities. According to the discussions after submitting the report, the authorities have postponed the plan to [charge at volume-based rate] for another month after recalculating the rates," said Htay Win, MPT chief engineer.
"It is likely that the rates will be lower than the current fixed [volume-based] rates," he added.
According to the previous fixed rates, the volume-based rates are divided into three types. In Plan A, users are charged 2 kyats per 100 kilobytes. Both Plan B and Plan C are for monthly data usage where users will be charged 1,500 kyats up to 200 megabytes in Plan B while they will be charged 7,000 kyats up to 1 gigabytes in Plan C. For additional charges in both plans, they will be charged 2 kyats per 100KB.
MPT also plans to give a special discount to students who use Plan C. They will be only be charged 25,000 kyats for 5GB Internet usage and 48,000 kyats for 10GB Internet usage, according to an official from MPT.
