Four women died when a speeding express bus skidded and turned over by Pathein-Chaungtha Road in Myanmar's Ayeyawady region in early hours of today.

The bus carrying 63 people was heading to Chaungtha beach after returning from the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda in Mon State on a pilgrimage when it went into a skid and overturned at Mile Post No.9 near Kyaukchaunggyi village on Pathein-Chaungtha Road at about 1am today.

A local witness who joined those giving help at the scene said the accident left many passengers seriously injured.

He said: "As the accident happened during sleep hours, it was very noisy with screams and shouts. When we arrived, a bus was lying upside down and the people were trapped inside. Many people from nearby areas gathered and pulled the passengers out. Many of them were injured. Then members of social assistance organisations arrived. Three dead women were flattened by the bus."

Twenty five injured people are receiving treatment at Pathein Hospital. Out of the four dead, three died on the spot and one died in hospital.

Legal action is reportedly being taken against the bus driver for reckless driving and speeding.
