The selection process for service provider in the telecommunication sector may have been tainted with conflict of interest as some of the 12 of the 100 companies chosen are said to have close relations with the government.

Moreover, some of these companies have a tendency to monopolize their industry in Myanmar.

The 12 names of the local and international firms in questions have been released by the Communication and Information Technology Ministry on April 11.

Three joint ventures are South Africa-based multinational mobile telecommunications company, MTN Group and Amara Communication from Myanmar; Singapore-based Singtel and Kanbawza and Myanmar Telephone from Myanmar and Japan-based KDDI and Sumitomo and Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Development Corporation (MICTDC) and A1 Construction from Myanmar.

Myanmar companies that listed above are closely associated with former military junta. Amara Communication is owned by Nay Aung Paing who is the son of former industry minister Aung Thaung. The company is subsidiary of IGE which has been permitted to invest in most of the country developing projects including banking, oil and gas and filling stations.

MICTDC is a cooperated crony companies like Shwe Than Lwin, Yadanapon Teleport and KMD.
