Myanmar postpones Davis Cup over security concerns

The Myanmar Government has decided to postpone the 2013 Davis Cup originally scheduled for April 22, citing security reasons.


"The officials have already decided to postpone the event because most of the countries are from the Middle East. Myanmar Tennis Federation already informed International Tennis Federation for postponement.


In spite of the ITF accepting the postponement, Myanmar is not sure for host country to resume the event at the opportune time. The ITF will have to seek a host coutry to hold the event, general secretary Lay Naing of the MTF said.


The nature of the threat was not clear but Lay Naing made referece to the fact that the participants were from the Middle Eastern countries.


The event is organised by the BNP Paribas Asia from April 22-May 5.


The Group IV Myanmar will participate was slated to be held in Theinbyu Tennis Course from April 22 to April 28. Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Jordan, Singapore and Bangladesh are in the same group IV with Myanmar.


Cambodia, Hong Kong, Iran, Malaysia, Omen, UAE, Vietnam and Oceania are included in the Group III and it was planned to be held from April 29 to May 5.
Almost all contenders in Group IV looking ahead to their April 22-29 event and the eight, including Cambodia, involved in Group III from April 29 to May 5 had already completed travel and accommodation arrangements and had poured in hours of training for more than a month, sources said.
