Myanmar to take census of migrant Bengali in Rakhine State

The number of migrant Bengali residing in Rakhine State of Western Myanmar will be taken census and will be discussed at the national level, officials from Rakhine State Government Information sub-committee told the journalists on April 24.
Census taking will start from April 26 to May 15 in 14 townships of Rakhine State. Final report is expected to be released on June 30, according to the sub-committee.
"This census will count the numbers of Bengali refugees. Maungdaw and Sittwe, where there is no Bengali refugee [but only migrant ones], will also be included. Before government will take census nationwide next year, we need to know the actual numbers of Bengali in Rakhine as well as illegal migrant Bengali there," Hla Thein, chairman of the sub-committee said.
Meanwhile, approximately 200 personnel from the Ministry of Immigration and Population have arrived in Rakhine for the project.
Hla Thein explained, "The census taking operation teams will draw a map when they enter the area to count the population. Then houses will be added on the map. Finally, every person in the household will be taken photo."
Current projected households' figures of different nationalities and ethnics according to the Ministry of Immigration and Population are reported as follows,
In Sittwe – 33927 Bengalis, 708 Kaman, 368 Hindus, 1092 Maramargyi and one other (46096 total households)
In Maungdaw – 90139 Bengalis, 2 Kaman, 55 Maramargyi, 534 Indian, 72 others (90802 total households)
In Kyautphu – 1973 Bengalis, 453 Kaman, 136 Maramargyi, 44 Hindus and six others (2612 total households)
In Thanttwe – 1797 Bengalis, 546 Kaman, two Maramargyi, two Hindus and eight others (2355 total households)
