''A day out with Sarah'' might well be the new face of a free media in Myanmar. The television show follows Tun Eaindra Wai - Sarah - as she ducks in and out of the finest eateries in Yangon, or tells the camera a snippet of Mandalay culture.

At 21, and just two years into a journalism career, she has already witnessed a remarkable transformation in the south-east Asian country, once ruled by a paranoid military junta. ''It has been surprising for Myanmarese - we hoped there would be changes but we never thought there would be such fast change,'' Ms Tun said.

Democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi is free from two decades of arrest, Thein Sein, the one-time general-turned-President was welcomed to Australia in March, and the name of the country officially recognised as Myanmar, rather than Burma.

Even once-strident state controls over news broadcasts have also eased, if yet to disappear entirely.

Ohnmar Myint Myat, 24, a TV scriptwriter with Myanmar International TV, also sees the move towards democracy taking hold.

The two are in Melbourne to train with the Asia Pacific News Centre at the ABC, sponsored by the Foreign Affairs Department in an attempt to encourage free media under the democracy reforms.

Their aim is a simple and one any reporter can admire.

''Instead of the other media coming in, we have to show them what we have,'' Ms Tun said.
