State-owned media announced yesterday that a special session of the Union Assembly will be called on May 20 to debate on the declaration of state of emergency.
The special session will be held at the meeting hall of Union Assembly at 10 am in Nay Pyi Taw, state-owned media reported.
The President declared a state of emergency in Meikhtila two months ago, following the communal violence that claimed the lives of 43 people and injured 86.
"As it has been 60 days since the state of emergency was declared in Meikhtila, the President needs approval from the Union Assembly to extend it. Although the [Union Assembly] Speaker said the Parliament will be called in June, the President Office informed him and asked him call a special session," Upper House MP Dr Aye Maung said before the announcement was released.
The Constitution states that the Union Assembly Speaker may convene a special session or an emergency session, if necessary and he may also convene a special session or an emergency session as soon as possible when the President informs him to do so.
"I heard that a special session will be called for the Meikhtila issue. As it's a special session, I don't think it'll take long like regular sessions," said Lower House MP Thein Nyunt.
Upper House Speaker Khin Maung Myint will continue to serve as Union Assembly Speaker during the special session and Lower House Speaker Thura Shwe Marn will take over the role when regular session resumes on July 31.
