US, EU to build wood products factories in Myanmar

US, EU to build wood products factories in Myanmar

The United States and the European countries have planned to invest in the manufacturing of finished wood products in Myanmar, according to the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry.

The fact that Myanmar is expected to terminate the log exporting in 2014 is interesting for the foreign countries to invest in this sector.

"The ministry is leading for the exporting of forest products as the competitive wood items. Since exporting log is going to be ceased in 2014, being able to export the tertiary wood products plays important. Now, the US and the EU are keen to invest in building factories to produce finished wood products in Myanmar," said an official from the ministry.

Likewise, the Asian companies also discussed to construct the factories producing woods and wood products in the form of value-added ones.

Bar Bar Cho from Myanmar Timber Entrepreneurs Association said "US and EU are the main territories of the finished products markets. Primary wood products will be traded within the region like India or China."

He added that from March 3 on, Myanmar has adopted the system of using timber certification in order to penetrate the EU market. The ministry supports Timber Legality Assurance System – TLAS to make sure the legality of the Myanma timbers.

The western countries have now re-granted the exporting of the country's wood products. Myanmar's exports of competitive wood products account for only ten per cent of the total log exporting.
