Yangon's townships face water shortages

Three townships in Yangon are suffering from water shortages as the lakes and wells are being dried up in hot summer, government officials say.
Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) therefore is supplying tens of thousands of gallons of water to the residents daily, the officials said.
Over 50,000 gallons of water are being provided daily to Dala and Seikgyi-Kanaungto townships as well as some villages in Kyimyindine township in Yangon region.
The YCDC said it has to provide water to 20 out of 23 wards in Dala Township, which is known for its water scarcity.
Since last month, those three townships have been provided water under a quota system. So far, over 100,000 gallons of water have been provided to Dala Township, the officials said.
"This year, water shortages in those townships have not suffered severely like previous year. We will have to provide sufficient water to the residents until they can enjoy enough of water," an official from the YCDC (Water and Sanitation) Department said.
Similarly, the YCDC dug the wells for the residents in Seikgyi KanaungTo Township for ensuring of drinking water throughout water pond systems.
Moreover, the YCDC is also helping over 40,000 gallons of water daily to 11 villages in Kyimyindaing Township.
The dams can't supply water to the locals in three townships because these water shortage-affected regions are located on far-flung areas in Yangon region.
If Toe River purified - water supplying project will be made there, the residents from Dala and Seikkyi kanaungto Townships can enjoy the water sufficiently. But, the plans are underway to implement the project.
Likewise, the present surveys are being made for construction of KokKowa River purified - water supplying project. Upon completion the project, purified drinking water will be distributed to the people in 11 villages in Kyimyindaing Township.
