STRASBOURG, France, June 14 (UPI) -- The government in Myanmar is called on to address human rights concerns regarding the Muslim minority, the European Parliament said.
Members of the European Parliament urged Myanmar's government and all members of society to "act immediately" to respond to human rights abuses against the minority Rohingya Muslim community.
Myanmar earned praise from the international community for political reforms enacted since 2010. Ongoing violence between Buddhists and members of the minority Muslim community has overshadowed some of those developments.
European leaders said the government should conduct an investigation into allegations members of the national security force were involved in violence against the minority community.
A temporary curfew was enacted for northern Myanmar in response to sectarian riots last month. Members of the Buddhist community were suspected of tearing down homes belonging to Muslims.
Myanmar security forces are suspected of doing little to control the violence.
"While recognizing the steps to introduce democratic reforms over the past year, MEPs urge the government to continue implementing solutions to the underlying causes of the tensions, including measures to address the status of the Rohingya," a parliamentary statement said Thursday.
