The Parliament has called for an urgent meeting of relevant agencies working national defense and security amid a growing concern over the pace and direction of the peace process with rebel groups in the country.
Lower House Speaker Thura Shwe Mann on June 28 stated the Parliament's desire to see the emergency meeting convene.
The government has been working with the Union Peacemaking Committee to end conflict and insurgency in the country. While they have been success in some respect, there are just too "side effects" that have to be addressed.
As these reasons should be taken into consideration, the memo to call the meeting on national defense and security had to be sent to the President, said Lower House Speaker.
The parliament had already formed the committee for fundamental rights of citizens, democracy and human right, the implementation committee for ethnic affairs and internal peace, the committee for rule of law, stability and peace and the committee for Judicial and legal affairs in order to take measures in politics, security and peace, said Thura Shwe Mann, adding that only when rule or law prevails in the country, can we witness internal genuine peace and full democratic and human rights.
He also pointed out that peace has not prevailed in spite of claims.
President Office Minister Aung Min and Immigration and Population Minister Khin Yi update the lawmakers on the progress of the peace talks between the government and the ethnic armed groups at the Parliament session on June 28 after the memo had been sent back by the President.
The National Defence and Security was formed with the President, two Vice-Presidents, the Lower House Speaker, the Upper House Speaker, the Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services, the Defense Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Border Affairs.
