Malaysia to help repatriate Burmese nationals

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Authorities in Malaysia vowed Thursday (June 13th) to work with Burma in repatriating thousands of Burmese nationals following deadly clashes in the expat community, AFP reported.

Officials say that communal violence between Buddhists and Muslims in Burma has spilled over into Malaysia.

"It is a clash of (Burmese) among themselves," Malaysian Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Jaafar told reporters after meeting with a Burmese delegation. "The quarrel they have back home is brought to our country." Malaysia said Buddhists are often the subject of reprisal attacks from Muslim countrymen.

Clashes have led to at least four deaths and prompted a security sweep last week in the Burmese community that led to the detention of 250 people.

There are also tens of thousands of refugees from Burma in Malaysia. "We have 4,400 (Burmese) detained in immigration detention centres now, and we have invited the (Burmese) authorities, especially the embassy, to ... bring them back," Wan Junaidi said.
