Myanmar's military would recruit new cadets without prejudice of race and religion, said Deputy Defence Minister during a parliamentary session of the Upper House on Friday.

Deputy Minister Major General Kyaw Nyunt answered the questions raised by MP Harshein Bwe from Chin State Constituency No.8.

The MP asked whether the military academies could accept national citizens, regardless of race and religion, for the coming academic year in line with the constitutional provisions if they had right qualifications and whether they would be promoted while in service without having racial or religious discrimination.

The deputy minister said the military is strictly following those constitutional provisions and the current military is formed with the citizens of various national races shouldering defence and security duties.

"The military selects and appoints cadets yearly, regardless of race and religion. They are receiving training at the three military academies. There are also ethnic officers in the Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air Force)," Maj-Gen Kyaw Nyunt said.

After the cadets become officers, they are considered to be promoted in accord with the rules and laws, he added.

Section 348 of the 2008 Constitution states that the Union shall not discriminate any citizen of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar based on race, birth, religion, official position, status, culture, sex and wealth.

Section 352 also states that the Union shall, upon specified qualifications being fulfilled, in appointing or assigning duties to civil service personnel, not discriminate for or against any citizen of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, based on race, birth, religion, and sex.

However nothing in this Section shall prevent appointment of men to the positions that are suitable for men only.
