Buddhist temples bombed in suspected Islamist retaliation

A series of bomb blasts in eastern India ripped through Buddhism's holiest shrine yesterday, arousing suspicion that the attack was in revenge for violence against Muslim minorities in neighbouring Burma and Sri Lanka.

Nine bombs exploded shortly before 6am at three sites in the city of Bodhgaya in Bihar state, where Buddha is said to have gained enlightenment. It is a major centre of pilgrimage and study for Buddhists from around the world.

Up to five people were injured in the blasts, including a 30-year-old monk from Burma and a Buddhist pilgrim, aged 50, from Tibet.
