Ministry to control journalists via complicated laws: MJA

The Information Ministry would indirectly control journalists with many complicated laws, Myanmar Journalists Association (MJA) said in a statement issued on Friday over a recently approved Printing and Publishing Enterprise Bill.

MJA rejected the press bill, which the Lower House of Parliament approved on Thursday.

The journalists doubted the ministry's moves as it has placed more emphasis on the press bill than the media bill, which is the most crucial for the media. The ministry trends to indirectly control the media with many complicated laws by drafting a Public Service Media bill and planning to draft a broadcasting media bill and library bill, said the statement.

Most of the amendments agreed between the ministry and the interim Press Council were not made when the bill was approved.

Moreover, amendments and supplements that the media industry can accept are also incomplete, the statement added.

MJA issued a statement on March 1 announcing amendments and supplements it wanted to make in the press bill drafted by the Information Ministry. It also urged the Press Council to seek suggestions from journalists and media people for amendments and supplements.

The Press Council discussed the issue with the journalists and later with the ministry. The discussion with ministry reportedly included the simultaneous submission of the press bill and the Press Council-drafted media bill to Parliament.
