Telenor to sell SIM cards within eighth month of getting license

Norwegian company Telenor will start selling its SIM cards within eighth month of getting its license, Telenor CEO told reporters on Wednesday.
"We are in negotiation with contractors to construct communication towers. We will install 2G and 3G mobile networks. The price of SIM card will be lower than 1,500 kyats," said Petter Furberg, Telenor's CEO.
Telenor Myanmar will be fully operated by Telenor and will expand its mobile network to the entire country in a five year period. Telenor will be charging 25 kyats per minute for calls.
"Although the communication law is not established yet, we are discussing the rules and regulations with the government officials in the final step of the tender. We won't delay the service after winning the license and will provide a service in eighth month time," the CEO added.
Telenor is planning to open about 70,000 retail shops which will sell SIM cards and about 90,000 or 100,000 shops which will sell top-up cards all over the country.
Deputy Minister for Communications and Information, Thaung Tin has said on July 10 in Nay Pyi Taw that the two licence holders must pay a compensation of US$ 200 million should they fail to live up to their initial investment promises.
Telenor and Qatar-based Ooredoo were chosen to operate two private telecom licences after winning a competitive international tender in June. Less that 10 percent of Myanmar's 60 million population currently have access to mobile phones and services.
