Fans and admirers gathered to commemorate the 9th anniversary since the death of legendary Myanmar singer Htoo Eain Thin on Wednesday at the New Zero Artspace gallery in Yangon.

Htoo Eain Thin is one of the Myanmar's greatest vocalists and composers. He was born in 1963 and died in 2004 of heart disease.

His songs composed in the 1980s have been widely influential to Myanmar's popular music industry. His very first album named "Naryi Paw Mha Myatyeasat Myar" meaning "Teardrops on the Clock" was launched in 1987, and won many peoples hearts. The title song is still popular among today's youngsters.

The commemoration was organised by artists, writers and fans. They recited condolences, poems composed in his honour and played his original songs on poor quality cassette tapes. The commemoration started at 3pm with a speech of condolence and ended at 5 pm.

"I didn't attend his funeral for I thought that he was a valuable person and left the world too early. But I celebrate his birthday and passing away every year. He was much younger than me," said the writer Ma Ei.

His fans still remember his typical wavy hair, bi-spectacled features and his quiet temperament. He was much loved by artists who still mourn him.

The solo singer produced a total of 15 albums. The last album was launched in 2005 after he died. Many of his songs were philosophical and provided young people strength to confront life's many challenges.

"I see many youngsters love him very much since only 2% of my poems are popular among youths while 98% of poems which are composed about him are well-known to them," said the poet Saw Wai.

One of his famous songs named "Yarzawin Myar Yae Thadothamee" meaning "Bride of Many Histories" is written by himself about the River Ayeyawaddy. The song tells how much Ayeyawaddy plays a vital role for the country past and present, depicting it's rich cultural heritage.

"I started to listen to his songs in 1989 when I was a seventh standard student. Since then, he was my hero musician. He was the only one who composed praise songs for maternal love for the whole album. Besides, his every single maternal song is heart-wrenching to listener," said an audience member Aung Win Tun.

Htoo Eain Thin's admirers launched the website www.htooeainthin.com in his honour.
